About
This article evaluates the effectiveness of sustained pediatric mass critical care responses in prolonged pandemics compared to temporary approaches for sudden-impact public health emergencies. Using Monte Carlo simulation modeling, the study assesses a region's ability to meet pediatric intensive care unit needs during hypothetical pandemics with and without mass critical care responses tripling the usual capacity. Findings show that mass critical care approaches are crucial in severe pandemics, accommodating most patients but still requiring consideration of rationing for some. The study highlights the importance of preparedness and capacity planning to ensure adequate care for infants and children during public health crises.
